Jennifer Whilden

Jennifer has been in search of color, whimsy, and surprise in clay since the very beginning of her career. She graduated from Towson University with a BS in Fine Art in 1995. Some describe her as a painter who pots. This can be seen in the intricate surface decoration and layering of colors in her work.

She often cites the communal atmosphere of the studio as integral to her practice and growth as an artist. This was the impetus for opening the community studio that she and her husband operate. Her college professor often said, “clay is the way.” It has been for Jennifer, and her desire is to make that path possible for others who also want to learn the medium.

Jennifer’s work has evolved and changed in the almost 30 years she has been potting. The throughline is her use of color and exploration of design. She primarily works in cone 6 clay bodies but occasionally makes batches in cone 10…since the studio has a cone 10 gas kiln! Her work is food safe. She recommends hand washing and not microwaving her pieces.

But most of all, Jennifer wants you to use the pieces you buy. She takes great pleasure in the thought of being a part of her customers’ daily lives.
